Over the next several days, heat will be our main concern as temperatures rise into the upper 90s, while the heat index pushes well above 100F. Heat advisories are in effect this afternoon and Tuesday. For this afternoon, the advisory covers Acadiana and areas along I-49. For Tuesday, the entire region will be under a heat advisory, with forecasted heat index values up to 109F. This hot weather is due to a robust upper-level ridge centered over the Four Corners region that extends across the southern US. This ridge will continue to create sinking air, leading to mostly clear skies and keeping rain chances basically at zero through the middle of the week. The main limiting factor to the heat across the region will be afternoon mixing of dry air aloft down to the surface, lowering dew points and the heat index. For the next few days, the heat will be dangerous; if you are outside, make sure to take plenty of breaks and stay hydrated.
The forecast will begin to change on Thursday as the ridge begins to weaken and rebuild farther west. As the ridge weakens, we will see a small increase in chance of rain as a series of weak troughs rotate around it. With less subsidence, we will also see more cloud cover and possibly a few diurnally driven showers and storms on Friday and through the weekend.
